He was the son of Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, a popular historian, journalist, and sociologist, and his mother Maria Amélia Cesário Alvim was a pianist and painter: Singer Miúcha and politician Ana de Hollanda are his siblings. Marieta Severo was the first wife of Chico and they got separated in 1999. The couple had three children: Helena Buarque de Hollanda, Luísa Buarque de Hollanda, and Sílvia Buarque. He married Carol Proner a second time. Carol was a Brazilian lawyer and law professor.
