She was born on 17 March 1945, in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in a poor family. Ercy Paiva Carvalho and Romeu de Oliveira Costa are her parents. Rogério Carvalho Costa was the brother of Elis and died on 22 April 1996. She first married Ronaldo Fernando Esquerdo e Bôscoli in 1967 and had a child, João Marcello Bôscoli. The couple got separated in 1972. In 1973, she married a second time to César Camargo Mariano, a pianist, and divorced eight years later. She had two kids with him, Maria Rita and Pedro Mariano.

At the age of 36, on 19 January 1982, she tragically died in São Paulo, Brazil, from a cocaine and alcohol overdose.

She started listening to Argentinean radio stations at a very young age and can sing in Spanish and Portuguese. Before: When she entered grade school, she was proficient in reading, writing, and counting. She sang on a local children’s radio show, “Clube do Guri,” at the age of 7. She became a local celebrity at 14 and earned more than her father.
